Frequently Asked Questions

What services does MARINE BiOTA offer?

MARINE BiOTA provides ecological consulting services specializing in marine and coastal environments. We offer Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), Protected Species Observers (PSOs), Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs), habitat assessments, underwater noise impact assessments, and other applied research for regulatory compliance and conservation.

Is MARINE BiOTA available for subcontracting or collaborations?

Yes. We frequently partner with environmental consulting firms, engineering companies, NGOs, and government agencies as subject-matter experts or subcontractors. We also collaborate on grant-funded applied science research.

What geographic regions do you serve?

MARINE BiOTA is based in the U.S. and serves the U.S. East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and select international marine regions. We specialize in work within U.S. waters regulated by BOEM, NOAA, and regional authorities as well as U.K. waters regulated by the MMO to name a few.

Do you provide PSOs for offshore projects?

Yes. MARINE BiOTA provides qualified Protected Species Observers (PSOs) as well as Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) and Passive Acoustic Monitor Operators (PAMOs)for offshore wind, oil and gas, and coastal construction projects. Our team is trained to detect protected species and ensure environmental regulations are met under regulatory guidelines.

Can MARINE BiOTA support Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs)?

Absolutely. MARINE BiOTA works with developers, environmental consultants, and agencies to provide scientific data and impact assessments that support the design and implementation of Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs), especially in marine, estuarine, and coastal settings.

What types of protected species do you monitor?

We monitor marine mammals (whales, dolphins, porpoises), sea turtles, seabirds, sharks, rays, coastal fish species, and bats, depending on project requirements. Our work emphasizes conservation of vulnerable and protected species under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA) through mitigation and minimization.

Does MARINE BiOTA work on terrestrial projects?

Yes. While we specialize in marine systems, we also support select terrestrial ecological monitoring projects, including bat acoustics services, habitat surveys, and more.
